What is Kinky Boots about?
Kinky Boots is a Broadway musical containing music and lyrics written by
Cyndi Lauper and there is also a book with name Kinky Boots by Harvey Fierstein.
It’s one of the most popular shows now going on Broadway and it’s a real sensation.
The musical can be described as simply dazzling, with an uplifting spirit.
The musical is based on the British film called Kinky Boots released in 2005,
written by Geoff Deane and Tim Firth. Its story is based on true events.
The musical narrates the story of Charlie Price.
He inherits a shoe factory called “Price and Sons Shoes” from his father - Joel Edgerton after his untimely death.
Later in the story Charlie becomes friends with cabaret performer and drag queen called Lola.
They become business partners in the production of high-heeled boots in order to save the shoe business.
At first Charlie and Lola appear to have at first insurmountable differences between each other.
But during their partnership in the business Charlie and Lola find they indeed have a lot in common.
Charlie’s family business is based in Northampton, England.
But Charlie is not very excited about the shoe trade.
Since their factory is in a big financial crisis Charlie is urged to fire 15 employees.
Fortunately, Charlie meets the cabaret singer Chiwetel Ejiofor who is a fabulous entertainer and also a travestite.
The drag queen Chiwetel motivates Charlie to prevent his father’s factory from closure by selling a line of erotic footwear he world has never seen.
Therefore they agree to produce sturdy stilettos despite the fact that the factory workers were not very keen on this idea.
Chiwetel Ejiofor complaints about the uncomfortable shoes cabaret dancers must wear at work.
Together with one of Charles' ex-employees, Lauren suggests to make some changes to the produced shoes in order to save the factory.
He suggests they should produce men's footwear. Lola offers his help as a footwear designer for the factory.
Consequently Charles start dealing with this non-standard idea while fighitng with both the staff’s prejudice,
Lola's life issues in the small town and the manipulation attempts by Charles'
self-indulgent fiance who is unable to realize the grand idea of Charles' dream.
After the show's conception in 2006, a creative team was gathered by 2010.
The original production of Kinky Boots made its premiere at the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago in October 2012.
Its choreography is made by Jerry Mitchell and starring Stark Sands and Billy Porter as Charlie and Lola.
On April 4, 2013 the musical made its debut on Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre.
The musical Kinky Boots began its tour around USA in 2014.
The musical won a total of 13 nominations and 6 Tony wins.
It was awarded for Best Musical and Best Score for Lauper as successful Broadway songwriter.
She was the first woman to be awarded in this category.
The musical's cast album made its premiere at 1st number on the Billboard Cast Albums Chart and reached number 51 on the Billboard 200 chart.
It also won three Laurence Olivier Awards, one of which is Best New Musical.

Lauper is a popular singer, songwriter and also actress who had won Grammy, Emmy and other awards for her performances and songs .
Both Fierstein and Lauper had received honors and previous critical acclaim in the fields they have devoted themselves.
Fierstein had won four Tonys (acting and writing awards for Torch Song Trilogy,
an acting Tony for Hairspray and one for writing the book of La Cage).
Lauper got her inspiration from musicals like South Pacific and West Side Story ,
also Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring and she was inspired by the pop singer Lana Del Rey.

The New York Times Lauper and Fierstein said during the movie’s adaption they focused on topics about of community and the universality of
the connection between a father and son and relate to problems about tolerance and self-acceptance of different types of people.
Fierstein said that there was a change in the idea between the movie about rescuing a
factory and the musical in which drag queens sing while pass an assembly line.
His opinion is that the biggest difference is that the musical is about two young men who are
from different worlds and after meeting each other they learn they have a lot in common.
They realize their need to follow their own path and passion in life and stand up to their fathers and society too.
